ASKAP Resolution for Continuum Surveys

One of the ASKAP science goals is surveying the southern sky to a detection limit of 50μJy beam at 1.4 GHz. Fairly high angular resolution is needed to avoid confusion and measure accurate positions of faint sources, but lower resolution is desirable for detecting low-brightness sources and minimizing computing and construction costs. The best compromise resolution may be θ ≈ 10 arcsec FWHM.

Resolution and confusion in ASKAP HI Surveys

In order to resolve a galaxy detected in an HI survey from its neighbours, and in order to allow accurate optical/IR identification, good resolution is required. However, in order to detect a galaxy in the first place, there needs to be a reasonable match between the array resolution and the angular diameter of the galaxy. Too much resolution will make the galaxy undetectable. By considering si...

HI Surveys with FAST and ASKAP

Surveys of galaxies in the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen are important parts of the science case for the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) and the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). The FAST strawman design with 19 beams and low system temperature allows a “survey speed” comparable to that of ASKAP. The combination of the two telescopes will allow a shallow all-sky survey ...

Galaxy redshift surveys selected by neutral hydrogen using FAST

We discuss the possibility of performing a substantial spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey selected via the 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen using the Five-hundred metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) to be built in China. We consider issues related to the estimation of the source counts and optimizations of the survey, and discuss the constraints on cosmological models that such a sur...

ASKAP-EMU: Overcoming the challenges of wide deep continuum surveys

Next-generation continuum surveys will be strongly constrained by dynamic range and confusion. For example, the ASKAP-EMU (Evolutionary Map of the Universe) project will map 75% of the sky at 20cm to a sensitivity of 10 μJy – some 45 times deeper than NVSS, and is likely to be challenged by issues of confusion, cross-identification, and dynamic range. Here we describe the survey, the issues, an...
